The people of Orangeburg County are grieving the tragic death of 17-year-old Jaida Gooden, who lost her life in a terrible accident on the morning of Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
The accident took place at approximately 8:40 a.m. at the junction of Riley Road and Mixon Mill Road, situated just south of Cordova. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a 2019 Chevrolet Impala heading north on Riley Road tried to turn left onto Mixon Mill Road but was hit by a 2010 Honda Accord that was also moving north.
The collision caused the Chevrolet to go off the road to the right, hit a ditch, and roll over. There were two individuals in the Honda, with Jaida being one of them. Despite medical attempts to save her, Jaida sadly succumbed to her injuries. The other passenger in the Honda was taken to a hospital nearby, while the driver of the Chevrolet remained unharmed.
Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle later identified Jaida and expressed the deep sadness felt by the community. Jaida was a bright and talented student at Edisto High School, recognized for her kindness, cheerful nature, and the positive impact she had on those around her.
Her unexpected death has created an immense emptiness in the lives of her family, friends, classmates, and the whole community that cherished her. She is remembered not only for her lively spirit but also for the futures she had ahead of her, filled with hope and promise.
As those who loved her come together in their sorrow, they cherish the memories of Jaida’s laughter, her enthusiasm, and the happiness she brought into their lives. Her influence will endure through the countless individuals she touched in her 19 remarkable years.
No additional information regarding the accident has been disclosed.
May Jaida find eternal peace, and may her family and community gain strength during this heartbreaking period.
