A serene Sunday morning transformed into a tragedy on November 2, 2025, as 24-year-old Jose Vicente Sanchez from Umatilla tragically lost his life in a catastrophic head-on crash on U.S. Route 395, near mile marker 3, located just outside Hermiston, Oregon. The incident took place at approximately 9:24 a.m. when a Volkswagen Passat traveling south veered into the lane meant for northbound traffic and collided with a Nissan 370, where Jose was riding as a passenger.
Jose was accompanied by 25-year-old Hadasa Esther Sanchez, also a resident of Umatilla, who incurred significant injuries and was swiftly taken to a local hospital. Tyler John Garrett, a 24-year-old from Hermiston and the operator of the Volkswagen, sustained severe injuries and was likewise transported to the medical facility. Unfortunately, Jose was declared dead at the location of the accident.
Friends and family fondly remembered Jose as a cheerful, giving individual, characterized by a bright smile and a nurturing demeanor that deeply impacted his community. Often referred to as loyal and always possessing a sense of humor, he was the kind of person who brought reassurance to those around him.
