Heartbreaking Accident Results in Death of Umatilla Community Member Jose Vicente Sanchez

 A serene Sunday morning transformed into a tragedy on November 2, 2025, as 24-year-old Jose Vicente Sanchez from Umatilla tragically lost his life in a catastrophic head-on crash on U.S. Route 395, near mile marker 3, located just outside Hermiston, Oregon. The incident took place at approximately 9:24 a.m. when a Volkswagen Passat traveling south veered into the lane meant for northbound traffic and collided with a Nissan 370, where Jose was riding as a passenger.


Jose was accompanied by 25-year-old Hadasa Esther Sanchez, also a resident of Umatilla, who incurred significant injuries and was swiftly taken to a local hospital. Tyler John Garrett, a 24-year-old from Hermiston and the operator of the Volkswagen, sustained severe injuries and was likewise transported to the medical facility. Unfortunately, Jose was declared dead at the location of the accident.

Friends and family fondly remembered Jose as a cheerful, giving individual, characterized by a bright smile and a nurturing demeanor that deeply impacted his community. Often referred to as loyal and always possessing a sense of humor, he was the kind of person who brought reassurance to those around him. His sudden passing has reverberated throughout Umatilla, where he was cherished as a son, brother, and friend.

Following the tragedy, the inhabitants of Umatilla and Hermiston have come together to grieve collectively, providing support to each other as they navigate through their sorrow. The location of the accident was cordoned off for nearly five hours while first responders and investigators worked meticulously to analyze the scene. The Collision Reconstruction Unit of the Oregon State Police has taken charge of the inquiry, although the reason for the Volkswagen's lane violation is still subject to investigation.

While the investigation progresses, officials have yet to establish what led the Volkswagen to intrude into the northbound lane. The Oregon State Police, along with the Hermiston Police Department, Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, and Umatilla County Fire District 1, all responded to the unfortunate incident.

Amidst this loss, those close to Jose are contemplating the positive influence he held over his community. His lively personality, selflessness, and compassion continue to be remembered, as the community finds comfort in the joyful memories of his laughter and the kindness he extended to everyone he encountered.
