MAULDIN, S.C. — The fire service in Upstate is mourning the death of 27-year-old Firefighter Joshua Robert Gardo, who sadly passed away in a motorcycle accident on Sunday night.
As per the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, the accident happened at approximately 6:30 p.m. close to Ashmore Bridge Road and Sonoma Drive. Gardo, who lived in Pickens, lost control of his motorcycle and was found dead at the site of the accident.
Gardo was a member of the Gantt District Fire Department, where he earned a reputation for being devoted, brave, and deeply committed to serving others. In response to his death, his department issued a poignant statement:
“It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of one of our firefighters, Joshua Gardo, who was taken from us on Sunday evening. Even though his time among us was tragically brief, Joshua served the community with valor and dedication. His readiness to face peril for the protection of others highlighted both his character and vocation. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and all who were impacted by his life. Joshua, we thank you for your dedication. We will preserve your legacy by carrying on the mission you valued.”
Friends, coworkers, and local residents have noted Gardo as a trustworthy young firefighter with a promising future—one who handled every emergency with professionalism and compassion. His absence is profoundly felt by both the department and the community he served.
The Mauldin Police Department is collaborating with the coroner on the ongoing investigation.
Joshua Gardo will be remembered not just for his dedication, but also for the empathy, courage, and kindness he displayed in his work and interactions with those around him.
