Castro Valley, CA — What was intended to be a joyful family excursion for a milestone birthday tragically transformed into an unimaginable loss when 49-year-old Jason Elola, a father to nine children, lost his life due to a road rage incident over the weekend.
As stated by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the event took place around 7:40 p.m. close to the intersection of Wilbeam and Norbridge Avenues. Authorities indicate that a dispute arose following a traffic accident involving Elola and 37-year-old Martin Davis Jr. After the crash, a violent confrontation occurred. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrived on the scene to find Elola in critical condition and promptly transported him to a local hospital, where he ultimately passed away from his injuries.
Davis initially left the scene but later called the non-emergency line of the CHP to disclose his involvement. He returned to the vicinity and cooperated with law enforcement. Subsequently, Davis was arrested on suspicions of murder and is currently being detained at Santa Rita Jail. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated, and officials have yet to confirm whether the crash was deliberate.
Family Outing Turns to Tragedy
Elola’s family revealed that he, accompanied by his wife, two young daughters, and other relatives, had devoted the day to celebrating their son's 18th birthday in San Francisco. En route home, they decided to stop at Loard’s Ice Cream, a long-time family favorite. “They wanted to stop for some ice cream at my dad’s favorite place he used to take us as kids,” remarked Angel Elola, Jason’s son.
As they took the exit from the freeway, another car collided with the rear of Elola’s vehicle. Worried for his family's well-being, Elola exited his car to check on them and evaluate the circumstance. “My dad, the protector he is, wanted to make sure his wife, five-month-old baby, and 5-year-old daughter were OK,” said Angel. “He wasn’t a confrontational man—he was trying to de-escalate things. But it all unfolded so rapidly.”
Elola’s wife, Gabrielle, recounted the moments leading up to the tragic event. “The other driver had veered into our lane and began hitting our car at a stoplight,” she said, full of emotion. “We were frightened. My husband stepped out to shield us.” Moments later, she spotted her husband on the ground. “He couldn’t see me. He couldn’t speak to me.”
Remembering a Loving Father and Protector
Jason Elola was celebrated for his warmth and generosity. Friends and family describe him as a dedicated father who prioritized his family above all else. “He was the kind of person you could rely on when you needed help,” his cousin, Joseph Munoz, stated. “One of the best fathers I’ve ever witnessed.”
His son, Angel Elola, emphasized the profound influence his father’s kindness had on those around him. “The kindest, most welcoming, loving man that anyone ever encountered,” Angel shared. “Things can change in an instant, and the effects can ripple through families in ways you can’t imagine. There are nine children and four grandchildren who have been profoundly impacted.”
