GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Concerns among the public are increasing in Guyana following the passing of 15-year-old Navindra Mahase, whose encounter with law enforcement has prompted widespread demands for accountability and justice.

Initial reports indicate that Mahase succumbed after an interaction with police officers, leading to an internal assessment by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and scrutiny from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Although officials have yet to provide a comprehensive explanation of the events surrounding his death, relatives and advocates from the community are insisting on a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young man's demise.

Residents in the East Coast of Demerara have expressed their sorrow and anger, calling on those in charge to approach the investigation with integrity and fairness. Advocacy groups alongside parents have underscored that this situation brings to light widespread issues regarding the accountability of police forces and how youths are treated during police actions.

Community members are also emphasizing the need for solidarity among families and civic groups to guarantee that a complete inquiry into Navindra’s death is conducted, and that any conclusions reached are shared with the public.

The Guyana Police Force has mentioned that the issue is currently under ongoing investigation and that updates will be shared with the public once the examination concludes. The DPP’s Office has yet to release an official comment concerning the situation.

In the meantime, residents are assembling for peaceful protests, holding candles and signs as they call for justice for Navindra along with the assurance of safety for all youth within their neighborhoods.
