Boston Police Grieve the Loss of Detective Bruce W. Higgins Jr., Respected Officer and Cherished Mentor

The Boston Police Department and the city’s law enforcement sector are grieving the passing of Detective Bruce W. Higgins Jr., who died on Sunday, November 2, 2025, after a private yet valiant struggle with melanoma.

With 22 years of experience on the force, Detective Higgins was celebrated for his steadfast dedication to justice, guidance, and serving the community. He became a member of the department on October 20, 2003, as part of Academy Class #40-03, and his remarkable commitment quickly set him apart from his colleagues.

In 2012, his dedication and determination led to his advancement to Detective, where he served in District C-11 (Dorchester) and subsequently with the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit). His peers remember him as a reliable figure—one who was respected, disciplined, and profoundly compassionate in his policing methods.

That same year, his bravery and dedication earned him the Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Award, which is Massachusetts’ highest accolade for those in law enforcement.

Outside of his police duties, Bruce’s leadership was evident on the basketball court, first as a standout player at Catholic Memorial High School (Class of 1993) and Bridgewater State University (Class of 1997), where he achieved a remarkable total of 1,727 points across 106 games. His passion for the game took him back to Catholic Memorial, where he served as a coach and mentor, influencing young athletes with discipline and kindness.

Those close to him depict him as a person of quiet resolve, humility, and kindness, whose commitment to his wife Lori and their children Madelyn and Ryan formed the foundation of his life.

“Detective Higgins represented what it truly means to serve with honor,” stated the Boston Police Detectives Benevolent Society in an announcement. “He was a teammate in every respect—resilient, kind, and altruistic. His legacy will endure in the lives he mentored and safeguarded.”

The details regarding funeral arrangements are anticipated to be revealed in the upcoming days. The department intends to pay tribute to Detective Higgins’ contributions through an extensive police ceremony, honoring a life that demonstrated bravery both in and out of his official duties.
