Alexandria Grieves for Edguin Zelaya-Mendez, 18, Who Was Shot and Killed Early Saturday

 The Alexandria community is mourning the untimely passing of Edguin Zelaya-Mendez, an 18-year-old who was shot and killed early Saturday on West Bacon Street. Officers who arrived in response to a noise complaint at a nearby apartment complex close to West Bacon and Hickory streets reported hearing gunshots and found Edguin lying unresponsive next to a vehicle. Despite rapid attempts to assist him, he was declared deceased at the location.


Those close to Edguin describe him as a cheerful and generous young man brimming with enthusiasm, optimism, and potential. He is remembered as a caring son, brother, and friend, and his unexpected passing has created a significant absence in the lives of all who were acquainted with him.

The Richmond Police Department is diligently looking into the events leading up to his death. The Medical Examiner will ascertain the official cause and manner of passing.
