The community is grieving the tragic passing of 19-year-old Abbigal Garbers from Morenci, Lenawee County, who lost her life in a two-car accident on Monday evening in LaSalle Township, located just south of Monroe. The investigation into this tragic event is being conducted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which has reported that another driver sustained serious injuries.
Officials have stated that the accident happened at approximately 5:28 p.m. on South Telegraph Road (U.S. 24), close to West Stein Road. Deputies and emergency personnel quickly arrived at the site after alerts about a serious head-on collision involving two passenger cars.
Investigators found that Abbigal was driving a gray 2010 Toyota Corolla heading northbound when, for reasons that are still under investigation, her vehicle crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic. Her car collided head-on with a gray 2015 Hyundai Sonata moving southbound, which was being driven by 35-year-old Palmer G. Merkel from Temperance.
The damage from the collision was severe. The Hyundai ended up in the center of the road, whereas Abbigal’s Toyota was found on the southbound shoulder. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, requiring the involvement of multiple emergency response teams.
Abbigal was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where she was pronounced dead despite medical intervention. Her loss has left family, friends, and the community in deep sorrow. Authorities have conveyed their heartfelt sympathies to all who cherished her during this incredibly difficult time.
Merkel was taken to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo and remains in serious condition. Deputies indicated that both drivers were utilizing their seat belts; however, the severe nature of a head-on collision can result in critical injuries, even when safety precautions are properly followed.
Following the accident, a coordinated emergency response was initiated, including assistance from the LaSalle Township Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Program and Victim Services Unit. Their efforts included providing medical care as well as emotional support for those affected.
