As reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, authorities arrived at the site shortly before midnight to find two individuals with gunshot injuries. Despite attempts to save him, Matthew Jackson succumbed to his wounds. The second person involved, Ray Cummings, is anticipated to recover following his shooting but is still processing the trauma from the incident.

Cummings, who was acquainted with the shooter, 28-year-old Dawud Burritt, recounted a tense exchange that precipitated the tragic occurrences. Investigators noted that while Cummings and Burritt were once friends, a disagreement had caused them to become estranged. On the evening in question, the two confronted each other inside the establishment, leading to a fierce dispute. Witnesses indicated that Matthew, who was on duty at the time, tried to intervene in an attempt to quell the conflict.

However, shortly after Matthew stepped in, gunfire erupted, and he was hit. Burritt fled the area, prompting police to swiftly initiate an investigation. Detectives rapidly collected evidence and interviewed witnesses, successfully identifying Burritt as the perpetrator. He was taken into custody on Sunday morning and is now facing charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and armed burglary. His next court appearance is planned for December 16.

The family of Matthew is heartbroken over their loss. In a heartfelt statement, his mother reflected on his character, describing him as a diligent and caring young man who was cherished by those close to him. "Matthew was concerned for those in his life, always looking out for others," she recounted, struggling to hold back her tears. “He possessed a generous spirit, and his aspiration was to enlist in the United States Marine Corps after graduating. This was his path. He was just beginning to embark on his life journey.”

In addition to his mother, Matthew is survived by his twin sibling, and his family has urged the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this painful period. His untimely death has resonated deeply with many, and the support from the local community has been profoundly significant.

To assist with burial costs and provide help to the Jackson family, a GoFundMe page has been created. The contributions will aid in covering funeral expenses and alleviating the financial strain on the family as they navigate this tragic time.

The passing of Matthew Jackson serves as a somber reminder of the potential for violence to erupt at unexpected moments and underscores the need for safe intervention during conflicts. As the Jacksonville community mourns, the family hopes to celebrate Matthew’s legacy by highlighting the kindness and altruism he exhibited throughout his brief life.
