A guy is critically injured following a gunshot at the Rock Hill Galleria Mall on Friday, which led to a quick police reaction and a brief lockdown of the neighborhood.
According to the Rock Hill Police Department (RHPD), officers were dispatched to the mall after receiving reports of gunfire within the shopping complex. Police discovered one individual who had been shot when they arrived. After being transported to a nearby hospital, his condition remains critical.
Authorities have confirmed that the alleged shooter is in custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Police did not immediately identify the victim or suspect, citing the continuing investigation.
"The Rock Hill Police Department is investigating a gunshot at the Galleria Mall. "The gunman is in custody and there is no threat to the public," the agency stated in a formal statement. "There will be more police officers visible while the investigation is going on.
Parts of the mall parking lot were surrounded by crime scene tape as investigators and forensic units began to process the material. During the initial response, people were evacuated and some mall stores temporarily closed while authorities secured the area.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as individuals ran for their lives as the gunshots started. "It was horrific – we simply heard a massive pop and everyone started running," said a patron near the food court at the time.
Police emphasized that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, even though details on a possible motive or relationship between the attacker and victim have not yet been confirmed.
Residents may expect a greater level of police presence at the Galleria Mall and the surrounding areas while the investigation continues into the evening.
Authorities are urging anyone with more information or video footage from the location to contact the Rock Hill Police Department.
The mall is expected to reopen once investigators have completed their investigation and the area has been deemed secure.
