The university community has been extremely alarmed by this upsetting incident, which prompted an instant lockdown and a major response from local law enforcement.


Following reports of gunfire on campus, university officials said an emergency warning was issued. Until additional orders were given, instructors, staff, and students were instructed to seek protection and remain in secure areas. Everyone on campus was urged to prioritize their safety and wait for official updates before leaving their designated shelters after the notice, which was distributed through the university's emergency notification system.


Alcorn State University administrators emphasized the seriousness of the situation in a statement and advised the community to stay put until an official "all-clear" declaration was given. Although there is currently little information available from Alcorn State University, at about the same time, a different and equally concerning shooting incident happened in Hinds County close to Jackson State University (JSU). Police reported that gunfire broke out near the JSU stadium's West Street tailgate area, where sizable crowds had gathered for weekend events.


Authorities say that during the shooting near the JSU stadium, a youngster was wounded by gunfire. The injured toddler was promptly taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) by Jackson Police Department (JPD) officers for immediate medical attention. The victim's condition has not yet been disclosed by the hospital.


The Jackson Police Department and the Capitol Police are among the law enforcement organizations presently collaborating to look into the circumstances surrounding the JSU incident. As of late Saturday evening, no arrests had been made, and officials have not disclosed any information regarding suspects. Any witnesses who may have information that could help identify individuals involved have been urged to come forward by investigators.
