WISCONSIN, MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee's community is in mourning for the sudden death of Keiairra Travis, a beloved local businesswoman who was killed in a hit-and-run accident just after midnight on Saturday.
The fatal incident happened near the junction of North 35th Street and West Capitol Drive, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. Travis is thought to have been crossing the street when she was struck by a car traveling east at high speed, which continued to drive without stopping. The automobile fled into the darkness, and witnesses reported hearing a loud collision noise followed by tire squealing.
Emergency personnel were sent out right away after 911 calls revealed that a pedestrian had been hit. When first responders arrived, they found Travis unconscious and gravely hurt. She was pronounced dead at the spot despite the heroic attempts of paramedics to resuscitate her. Authorities launched a thorough search for the driver who caused the collision because the driver did not stay to provide assistance.
In an attempt to identify the car connected to the incident, detectives from the Milwaukee Police Department's Hit-and-Run Task Force are now reviewing local video footage. Anyone with information about the motorist or who may have seen the collision is being urged to come forward. The vehicle was probably traveling at a high speed at the time of the collision and is thought to have sustained apparent frontal damage.
Keiairra Travis is described by those close to her as a hardworking and inspiring young lady who had just launched her own small business and was respected for her commitment to helping others. In remembrance of her, friends and family members gathered at the scene of the event on Sunday, placing flowers, lighting candles, and writing notes. A bereaved friend said, "She was full of life, smiling all the time, and encouraging everyone around her." "Her absence because of someone else's reckless decision is difficult to understand."
The community's concerns about careless driving and the rising frequency of hit-and-run occurrences in Milwaukee have been rekindled by this tragic tragedy. Since fatal pedestrian collisions have dramatically increased over the last two years, city officials have called for more traffic enforcement and stiffer fines. Advocates point out that careless drivers have lost many lives as a result of their avoidance of responsibility.
As public concern grows, law enforcement has increased patrols in high-risk areas and is collaborating with neighborhood organizations to raise awareness of responsible driving and safe driving techniques. “Every hit-and-run represents a life lost needlessly,” said a Milwaukee Police Department representative. "We will not give up until Keiairra and her family receive justice."
Leaders in the town are asking citizens to assist police as the investigation continues. While local campaigners are planning a candlelight memorial later this week to honor Keiairra's memory and lobby for her, some local businesses have offered to provide CCTV footage.
