Manchester Attacker Named, Images: Three Died in Manchester Synagogue Car and Stabbing Attack on Yom Kippur
A severe incident has been reported in north Manchester this morning after a car collided with worshippers and a security guard was stabbed outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road, Crumpsall.
At 9.31 a.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported receiving a call. The national emergency protocol for suspected acts of terrorism, Operation Plato, was announced by armed cops within three minutes.
According to GMP, the guy got out of the car and began stabbing people after it was purposefully driven into members of the public. Armed police officers shot the suspect a few minutes later. People believe he has passed away.
Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service treated four people immediately for injuries caused by the automobile and the knife. Authorities have since reported the deaths of two people.
On Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, worshippers had gathered at the synagogue for services when the assault took place.
Following the incident, medical facilities in Greater Manchester, including Royal Oldham, Salford Royal, Rochdale Infirmary, and Fairfield General, were placed under lockdown. Several local schools and community centers also mentioned increased protection.
A bomb disposal squad was established as a precaution after armed officers on the scene warned bystanders to evacuate the area because the attacker might have had an explosive device. No explosive was present.
The man is seen on the ground at the synagogue gates in online video, surrounded by armed police officers. At one time, officers can be heard shouting their fears about a possible bomb. The man attempted to rise before the police fired fire and dragged him to the ground.
Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, stated, "People can be assured that the immediate danger has been dealt with promptly and efficiently, even though this was a very severe issue." Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the Manchester Jewish community on these most sacred of days.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on his way back to the UK from the European Political Community session in Copenhagen after being updated on the situation. A meeting of the COBR emergency committee has been called to order in London this afternoon.
A citizen said that he had witnessed a car being driven toward individuals around 9.31 a.m. and that one man had been stabbed. Police were able to identify the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall as a result of this. GMP announced PLATO and a major incident at 9.37 a.m. GMP firearms officers started shooting at 9.38 a.m. One person who was shot is believed to be the culprit. For their injuries, four members of the public are undergoing medical care.
