Grant Freeze, a swimmer and student at Nicolet High School, died in an automobile accident in Mequon, Wisconsin.

 Grant M. Freeze, a well-liked Nicolet High School student and superb swimmer, lost his life in a tragic collision near Mequon on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. His departure is being mourned by the communities of Fox Point, Milwaukee, Ozaukee County youth hockey, and Cedarburg.


According to the Mequon Police Department, the crash occurred just after 3:45 p.m. on West Pioneer Road close to North Klug Lane. Investigators say a westbound SUV driven by a 16-year-old teenager who had crossed the middle line collided with a 57-year-old man's eastbound dump truck.


Emergency responders from the Southern Ozaukee Fire Department arrived on the site in a timely manner. The young driver, later identified as Freeze, was rescued from the wreckage, but Flight for Life had to transport him to Froedtert Hospital due to possibly deadly injuries. Even though he received vital medical care, he passed away later that evening.


The dump truck driver was also sent to Froedtert Hospital with severe injuries, but he is expected to survive.

West Pioneer Road was closed for almost four hours as the Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Team conducted their investigation. The employees of the Ozaukee County Highway Department and Emergency administration assisted with the cleanup and administration of the road closure.


Freeze was a dedicated student-athlete at Nicolet High School, a talented swimmer, and a well-known teammate and friend in the Ozaukee minor hockey scene. His premature passing has caused great sadness to the various teams and organizations he was a part of.


Reminiscent of Grant's perseverance in the pool, his peer leadership, and his kind, encouraging manner both inside and outside of athletics, coaches, friends, teammates, and classmates have been sending condolence and remembrance messages.


The collision is still being looked at by local authorities.
