Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico is under lockdown because of an active shooter.

Early Friday morning, the installation was placed under total lockdown due to reports of an active shooter on or near Cannon Air Force Base. Emergency alerts were distributed across the base at around 5:37 a.m. local time (11:37 UTC), instructing all employees and their families to stay indoors while security personnel dealt with the situation.

First signs suggest that base security and local law enforcement are planning a coordinated response in line with standard military emergency protocols. All roads leading to and from the base are closed to civilian traffic, and all gates have been guarded.

Cannon AFB is located near Clovis, New Mexico, and serves as a key base for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The base is still listed as being in "credible risk," which indicates a current and possibly ongoing crisis, even though the nature of the threat has not yet been made public.

Residents and employees on the base have been instructed to remain indoors, refrain from using any communication channels that might interfere with emergency operations, and be quiet. Emergency notifications from the base advise residents to turn off lights, block off doors, and wait for official security officer approval before moving.

Eyewitnesses report a heavy security presence, with tactical vehicles and armed reaction teams positioned around key locations. The multi-agency reaction includes Cannon's own Security Forces Squadron, the Clovis Police Department, and the Curry County Sheriff's Office.

Military officials have not yet released information about the victims, suspects, or possible causes. According to an Air Force official, an update would be provided as soon as the situation is confirmed and stabilized.

This is one of several new security alarms that will be installed at US military installations in 2025. Threat reports or unauthorized access attempts have prompted lockdowns at many domestic locations in recent months, reflecting broader concerns about base security readiness and insider threats.

The public is being cautioned by authorities to respect the ongoing investigation and not spread unverified information. Updates will be made public through the appropriate channels of the Air Force and Department of Defense after the all-clear has been given.

As of this writing, the lockdown remains in effect, and all employees are encouraged to follow shelter-in-place instructions until further notice.

According to a seasoned Marine Gunnery Sergeant who is familiar with these protocols, "Base lockdowns are no joke."At this level of warning, there is actual risk. Until the all-clear is confirmed, there will likely be a media ban and a heavy security presence.

Cannon Air Force Base officials continue to closely monitor the situation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
