Michigan's Smerer, Jeff Huron Port Huron shooting following the alleged murder of his son Kayleb Smerer age 17.

The predawn silence of Thursday, September 11th, at a Port Huron apartment complex was disrupted by the kind of violence that leaves a community forever scarred. In an apartment on Glenview Court, where families were just beginning to get up for work and school, a father allegedly turned a pistol on his own children, killing one child, leaving two others fighting for their lives, and leaving the family permanently damaged. Only the children's mother and their older brother's heroic, last-ditch efforts kept the unspeakable misery from worsening.

The Port Huron Police Department has reported that 44-year-old Jeff Smerer is under arrest in connection with the horrific events that took place at his family's residence near the intersection of Krafft Road and 24th Avenue (M-25) at approximately 6 a.m. His 17-year-old son, Kayleb Smerer, who was just coming of age, was pronounced dead. His two younger siblings, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were taken to local hospitals and are in critical care due to serious, potentially deadly injuries.

Law enforcement officials, friends, and neighbors are dealing with the hard reality of an unimaginable domestic tragedy as a result of the incident, which has shook the tight-knit community of Port Huron.

A Morning That Turns Into a Horror

For residents of the Glenview Court apartment complex, Thursday morning began as any other. The air was cold, the sky was just beginning to lighten, and the sounds were the slow awakening of a town. However, that peace was going to be seriously

According to early reports from law enforcement, Jeff Smerer got into a fight at around six in the morning. According to authorities, Smerer took out a revolver and began shooting at his own children in the following moments. The sudden, booming sound of gunfire that echoed through the flat was a prelude to the catastrophe that was occurring within.

Kayleb, his 17-year-old son, suffered mortal injuries. The two younger children, whose identities are being withheld due to their age and the fact that they were the victims of a horrific crime, were also affected. After suffering serious injuries, the 13-year-old boy and the 12-year-old girl were left fighting for their lives.

The tragedy may have continued if not for the mother and older brother of the children's courageous and timely intervention. After hearing the chaos start, the two family members allegedly confronted and physically fought Jeff Smerer in an attempt to stop him from shooting any more shots. Their actions, driven by love and despair in the face of unspeakable tragedy, undoubtedly put an end to the rampage and avoided further deaths, allowing them to call for help.

The Hasty Response

The first 911 calls from the apartment complex reported gunfire and the sounds of a struggle. In a matter of minutes, St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies, Port Huron Police, and emergency medical workers arrived on the scene, their sirens blaring through the morning silence. It was a dismal and chaotic scene when they arrived.

First responders discovered the three young children who had been shot. They immediately began providing life-saving aid. Paramedics worked quickly to stabilize the two younger youngsters for transport. Because of the severity of their injuries, a cautious and prompt evacuation was necessary. Teams of doctors and surgeons began the desperate fight to save their lives at pediatric trauma centers after they were transported to McLaren Port Huron hospital.
