Karl Checkowy, Cause of Death & Obituary

Karl Checkowy's Cause of Death and Obituary: We regret to inform you of the demise of Karl Checkowy, a beloved prairie son who passed away on August 31, 2025. Karl was born on January 17, 1979, and led a life full of passion, tenacity, and purpose. In addition to being a talented athlete, Karl was a loyal friend, a kind family man, and a cornerstone of the Wood Mountain community. He was a genuine cowboy in every way.

Karl exemplified the Western virtues of devotion, diligence, and calm power from an early age. He proudly carried and honorably represented his history as a lifelong member of Team Wood Mountain. Karl's presence inspired calm resolve and solidarity in everyone around him, whether he was working behind the scenes or riding in competition.

He was more than just a cowboy because of his abiding passion for the land, the sport, and his people; he was a guardian of custom and a link between generations. Karl's honesty and patience served as an inspiration to many novice riders, and he was always willing to help out when someone needed it. He led by example, demonstrating to others how to live a purposeful and humble life rather than by using loud words.

Karl was a man of calm wisdom and a friend to many outside of the ring. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will miss his stories, laughter, and unwavering character. His life was centered on community, both physically and spiritually. He left a lasting impression on everyone who came into contact with him by freely giving of his time, knowledge, and heart.

In honor of Karl's life, the Sturgis Community Hall will host a Cowboy Farewell on Saturday, September 13th at 2:00 PM for family, friends, and the general public. Karl was a man of integrity, compassion, and love for others, and our meeting will be a reflection of that. It will be an occasion to reminisce, narrate, and traverse the legacy he leaves behind.

Karl's soul endures in the wind that blows across the wide prairie, in the hoofbeats of every horse that runs free, and in the hearts of those who continue to remember him as we say our goodbyes. Even though his boots are now empty, his influence endures.
