Johnson, Rachel Wichita Obituary, Cause of Death: Wichita Police Investigate Absent Wichita Woman's Murder
After finding a dead woman in a car at a home in south Wichita, Wichita police are investigating a murder case. The dead has been identified as Wichita resident Rachel Johnson, 43.
At around 5:17 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2025, police enforcement was notified of a missing person under questionable circumstances. Because of the seriousness of the case, homicide detectives were called in later that evening.
On September 26, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Johnson was last seen by family members while driving her black 2014 Ford Fusion.
Investigators were led to a residence in the 1800 block of South Longford Circle on Sunday, September 28. Officers spotted Johnson's car at the scene and discovered her dead inside. When they arrived at the house, they found a 39-year-old man in the basement who had apparently been shot himself and died. According to authorities, preliminary information suggests that Johnson and the man had a previous domestic relationship.
The investigation is still under progress.
Chief Joe Sullivan's comment:
"This incident is quite unfortunate. A neighborhood and a family are in mourning after a mother was killed in a senseless and cowardly crime.
We are reminded as October approaches—Domestic Violence Awareness Month—that numerous people are still impacted by domestic violence, sometimes in secret and behind closed doors.
Call 911 right away if you or someone you know is being abused. When feasible, find a way to get in touch with reputable local groups like Harbor House or the Wichita Family Crisis Center if calling the police right away is hazardous.
Nobody ought should have to live in dread in their own house. Assistance is available. You are not by yourself.
Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call the WPD Homicide Section at 316-268-4407 or submit an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111, according to the police.
