At Toledo Bend, the remains of Peyton Hughes, a Kentucky college angler who went missing, were recovered.

The body of 22-year-old Peyton Hughes, a member of Campbellsville University's kayak fishing team from Toledo Bend Reservoir, which is situated across the Texas–Louisiana border, was discovered by officials on Friday morning in a tragic turn of events.

Hughes, a native of Kentucky, was reported missing on September 24, 2025, when he failed to find his travel companion during a pre-tournament fishing trip. Hughes' kayak was initially found by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) officers, but the young fisherman was not found.

Hughes' mother, Sara Ashley Hughes, publicly acknowledged the recovery and voiced her grief, stating, "Oh NOOO, my baby is gone." This morning, his body was discovered in the water. My beloved boy is now with his father, who died for this country. We adore you, Adam and Peyton Hughes! God, I am hurting so bad!

The Bassmaster Kayak Series competition was scheduled for September 27–28, and Hughes was preparing for it. Using boats and specialized equipment, TPWD and local personnel searched the reservoir. Friends, family, and the wider kayak fishing community closely monitored developments during the frantic search.

Hughes' dedication to the sport and the loss felt by the competitive kayak fishing community were highlighted in the condolence letter from the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, or B.A.S.S. His family remembers him as an enthusiastic angler, a devoted son, and a young man whose life was tragically cut short.
